For the first time in 51 years, India will host 20+ football teams from around the world for the Special Olympics International Football Championship 2019. Both men’s and women’s teams will compete for the Championship Cup at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai between August 3rd and 6th, 2019.
Excitement about the championship has been palpable, particularly among the special community, which is counting down the days to the event. Meanwhile, SOIFC’s hosting partner, Evoke Media, has been busy organizing events leading up to the tournament. Press meets have been held to celebrate the Indian team’s massive medal haul at the recent Special Olympics World Games at Abu Dhabi and to launch the official SOIFC T-shirt. Yet another awaited event is the pan-India torch rally, in which celebrities, Olympians, and special athletes will take part to deliver the revered Special Olympics torch to the venue.
On August 3rd, Chennai will welcome the international teams with a dazzling, star-studded opening ceremony. The league, semifinal, and final matches are scheduled between August 4th and 6th. Spectators have plenty to entertain them besides the matches, with one-of-a-kind, high-tech gaming and health stalls that will be set up around the stadium. Organisers have promised that the awards and closing ceremony, which will happen on August 6th, will be a sight to behold. Indeed, the SOIFC 2019 may well become the biggest and grandest humanitarian sports event that the country has witnessed.
